This 9th arrondissement street exists since 1770, and used to have a less glamorous name as it follows an ancient Paris sewer! It stretches from the famous Printemps department store to therue du Faubourg Montmartre.
Another prominent feature ofrue de Provence(up until 1946) was theOne-Two-Two, one of the most luxurious and illustrious brothels of Paris, as well as its restaurant, theBœuf à la Ficelle. From Sacha Guitry to Jean Gabin, from Cary Grant to Katharine Hepburn, from King Leopold III of Belgium to Edith Piaf, it had its share of distinguished guests.
The street was named after the Comte de Provence (who then became King Louis XVIII).
